Most people diligently apply sunscreen when they go to the beach or swimming pool, but what they fail to remember is that the sun is up in the sky 365 days a year. Damage to your skin occurs cumulatively every time you are exposed to daylight and the risk of contracting skin cancer grows. There are many things that you can do to protect your skin from the dangerous sun rays year-round. It is necessary to use sunscreen the correct way, cover your skin properly and avoid all methods of tanning. These protective measures are all essential in preventing skin cancer. How to your protect skin
How to your protect skin
1.Wear a daily moisturizers with SPF 15 and UVA and UVB protection. Eighty per cent of the skin’s ageing process in due to UV damage. With each decade the number of cells that produce pigment (melannocytes) decreases by 10 to 20 percent, reducing your protection against UV rays “When choosing a sunscreen, think about more that just the SPF,” says Sydney dermatologist Jo Ann See. “Is in skin sensitive? Is it broad spectrum?” The SPF reflects only how well you’re protected from UVB, or burning, rays. But UVA rays also cause cancer and premature ageing. Use a sunscreen that contains zinc, titanium dioxide and oxybenzone, which protect against UVA and UVB rays. 2.Make sure your moisturiser has anti oxidants. Environmental stresses such as sunlight and pollution create free radicals. These unstable molecules steal electrons from healthy cells, which can cause premature ageing and skin cancer. But studies have shown that topically applied antioxidants such as vitamins C and E can minimize this damage. Apply in the morning because “they work best when combined with sunscreen”, advises See
3.Wear sunglasses with 100 per cent UV protection. They reduce squinting (which causes crow’s feet) and UV damage to the delicate skin around the eyes. They also help prevent retinal damage and cataracts.
4.Don’t smoke. Smoking, as well as increasing the risk of cancer, can cause elastic fiber damage, which may result in fewer nutrients reaching the skin says DR Stephen Lee, honorary secretary of the Australasian College of Dermatologists. A recent British study involving long term smokers, conducted over a three – year period, found that smoking 20cigarettes a day was equal in effect to almost 10 years of natural skin ageing. 5.Exfoliate once a week. As you get older, the rate at which your cells turnover slows. To compensate, you should exfoliate once a week with a product containing alpha-or beta-hydroxy acids (as these remove the top layer of skin, use them at night when skin isn’t exposed to sun). You can also use a granular scrub, but avoid any with overly aggressive ingredients, such as ground apricot pits. 6.Use avitamin A derivative ever night. Each year the collagen in your skin decreases by 1 percent . A prescription vitamin A product such as Retin-A has been proven to boost collagen (and plump up wrinkles). Start gradually, using the cream every other night. Still too harsh? Try a pharmacy cream that contains retinol, Retin –A ‘s weaker cousin. No matter which vitamin A product you choose, don’t use it during the day. Like alpha and beta-hydroxy acids, vitamin A make skin sensitive to the sun.
